Product Description

All our Cat6 G/SWA Cable is UK made. The cable is made with a Galvanized Steel Wire Armour and PE sheath. The core Ethernet (data) cable used is either Corning (F-FTP) or Draka (UTP). Two global structured cabling and connectivity giants. Corning + Draka (prysmian group) combined employ over 49,000 people. We are big on quality and proud to offer high end armoured cable that is manufactured in the UK

So, do I need a cat6 F-FTP or a cat6 UTP ? In fact, do I even need a Cat6 G/SWA Cable or will cat5 armoured cable do the job ? Lets try and clear that up for you. A UTP – Unshielded Twisted Pair cable is like your Ethernet cable (patch lead) at home (plugged into your SKY/BT router). All Ethernet (data) cable has 4 pairs of inner cables for termination and connectivity. An FTP – Foiled Twisted Pair cable has a Foil (screen) around the 4 pairs. An F-FTP – Foiled Foiled Twisted Pair cable, has a foil (screen) and individual screens around each pair.

FTP is used in applications where the cable may be lay next to loud or vibrating machinery. The screen protects the cable from interference (noise/vibration). Most applications require a standard UTP.

Do you need cat6 ? Its more expensive that cat5e. For most applications a cat5e cable will suffice. The difference is bandwidth, “headroom”. Cat5e offers 100MHZ. Cat6 is 200MHZ +. Bandwidth precedes data rates as traffic does motorways. Doubling the bandwidth is like adding twice the number of lanes on a motorway. Still unsure ? See this very detailed page.
